A904D
Chicago music retailer Minstrel Music put this one up for auction in June 2011 at $2,750, but it looks like it sold in the store first. Here's some additional info from the seller: "The guitar actually has two single blade pickups. The codes are CB and RT. The serial number is A904D. There are no changed parts, it is straight. Thank you."
Superb example, back on the market in April 2017 via Reverb with an asking price of $3,895. Nice to see the matching set of correct RT/CB pickups, as well as an extra saddle and truss rod adjustment tool. Not sure what the Allen wrench is doing in there but no matter. Interesting OEM case - the accessory compartment lid opens inward like the early '69 cases, but the rest of it has characteristics of the '70 - '71 cases. Since the serial number dates the instrument to the first half of 1970, maybe the case format isn't all that surprising.
Seller says action is "low, fast & smooth" so don't wait too long on this one...

"This is part of a great collection we've taken in from 1980's NJ hard psych band Nude Swirl's guitarist. (My band Nobody's Business did several shows with Nude Swirl at the Brighton Bar and elsewhere, good times.) I assume anyone considering the classic knows the lineage, slide in pickups, and storied history of Dan Armstrong and his great designs. The only thing I can add - I have not played a better guitar than this. I've played a reissue of this model for a while and owned a wood version but now I've played the original and it's a high level experience. No energy is wasted when you strum a chord. There are no rattles, buzzes or dissonant vibrations, resulting in a fast guitar with incredibly rich tone and seemingly endless sustain. Low fast and smooth."
"The vintage Bill Lawrence designed R-T (rock treble) pickup that is in now sounds like two strong single coils to my ear. The range is as wide as two at least. Output is strong and maintains clarity and rings nicely even in my old low wattage Supro tube amp, which is prone to early distortion. This one fights to stay clear and sounds otherworldly with a compressor and delay. I haven't tried the C-B (Country Bass) yet it comes with. I've been dealing with Dan's son Kent recently for some rewinds and floating pickups. I believe He makes custom pickups for these as well. As incredible as it is to see this iconic guitar, hearing it is stunning as well." "Comes with original hard case." "Thank you," "Mike, Secret Guitars" |
