D388A
Here's an early DA bass that ended up getting a new pickup along the way. Serial number was disclosed in an e-mail as D388A, which dates the instrument to 1969. Has the usual cracking around the input jack, and a chip in the formica veneer on the headstock. Also missing the thumb rest. Seller said there's no extra parts floating around in the case. The case itself is an early Ess & Ess case, which appears to have a replaced handle.
“This is a very cool bass with a tone of character! The headstock has a chip, the neck has finish cracks and wear spots and the pickguard is cracked around the jack. The neck is straight and plays well with nice action. The pots have minor static when adjusted. A good cleaning should eliminate this noise, and otherwise the pickup sounds fantastic! The tone pot appears to operate in reverse: "10" bleeds the treble off and "0" is full range signal. Includes hard case as shown. Please see photos for detail.” |
Back on the market in September 2016 with an asking price of $1,500 on Reverb (sold for $975 in October). Here's the latest description from seller Josh Hanson at Guitar Gear Ltd.

"It was pretty dirty when I got it. Also it looked like a wood piece has been made to cover the crack on the pickguard around the input jack. I removed what was left of the wood and reglued the pickguard back together. I also used a metal washer to help with the input jack. It's not a perfect fix, but its a whole lot better than it was when I got it. See the pictures for the before and after." "The body itself is in great condition with only minor signs of use. Especially great for an almost 50 year old guitar. This was not closet guitar though. The fretboard and frets are still in great shape but the neck shows plenty of signs of use. I am sure this thing could have a few stories to tell if it could talk." "The pickup was swapped at some point which is a bummer but it does have its original hardshell case. Its been used plenty, but it definitely still does its job. These basses are rare and have become pretty collectable as far as basses go. Here's your chance to own one at a great price!" |
