D964A
This bass came up for auction a few times in March and April 2012 but wasn't able to catch a bid. Asking price was $998.
"Earliest version, serial number D964A (1969) Ampeg Dan Armstrong Vintage Plexiglass Bass Guitar, Made in USA-Dan Armstrong with nice protective Peavey hardshell case. I am selling this bass and some other items for a local music store that is closing. When I received this guitar, the pickup did not work correctly, the controls did not work correctly, unstock bridge, unstock knobs. I talked to Ken Armstrong (Dan's son) on the phone and I sent the original pickup to him to be rebuilt. He called me and told me that it could not be rebuilt and I purchased a NEW (USA-ARMSTRONG) exact pickup for this bass. The local luthier/guitar tech manufactured a beautiful copy of the original bridge (he purposely made the bridge block slighly taller than original so the new owner can shave it down for lower action), replaced the bad pots, installed the pickup, set up the guitar (it intonates and plays beautifully) and it is ready to go. It turned out way way cool. Ken told me that this is the earliest version of this rare and excellent sounding bass. It has beautiful rosewood burled fingerboard and headstock(looks to be brazilian-gorgeous), original Grover tuners. The knobs have been replaced, the bridge was manufactured, the pots have been replaced and as mentioned, the pickup has been replaced with the exact current production USA duplicate-Ken Armstrong. The buyer will also receive the original pickup that is not working and the bag of parts that were replaced, along with the Kent Armstrong patch. This bass is way way cool, sounds excellent, plays effortlessly and has major major mojo. It is dynamic, extended, natural, and very musical. The body is in very nice condition, some light scuffs and hazing that could be polished out. There are no serious scratches, dings or dents. This is a rare bass. It will be shipped in a factory guitar box that is oversized. It will weigh 28 lbs safely boxed. I usually ship within 24 hours and I will email a tracking number. Bid with confidence, see my feedback."
