This guitar came up on eBay in January 2009 with an asking price of $2,699. Although it didn’t sell, the description about the bridge work, intonation and low action shown in one of the pics really makes you want to play it. Check out the open-coil humbucker that somebody made into a working pickup assembly...way cool!
"Well, Christmas is finally over....and I am offering this original 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong Lucite clear body guitar for sale. These guitars were popularized by the late 60's-era Rolling Stones and later on by Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. They are widely known for their instantly removeable pickups that literally slide in and out in a matter of seconds with the removal of a simple thumb screw. This particular guitar comes with four different pickups...two old original 60's single coils (an "RB" and a "CB"), a newer single coil from one of the new reissues (which in my opinion is the best sounding one of the bunch) as well as a cleverly built custom made humbucker. As you can see someone went to a HELL of a lot of trouble to make this a true professional grade instrument. They removed the crappy non-adjustable bridge that it originally came with and professionally installed a hardtail Strat-type bridge. This modification allows for absolutely PERFECT intonation.... I have had extensive set-up work done on this guitar by my favorite Nashville luthier. The frets are perfectly level and the neck is dead straight....in fact I would venture to say that this thing plays better and is more IN TUNE than any other one of these guitars that you could ever possibly find. The switch was removed, but the original pots, knobs, Schaller keys, woodgrain pickguard, and serial number are intact....the headstock has never been cracked or repaired. There is a fair amount of finish wear on the back of the neck. The guitar weighs exactly 9.4 pounds on my digital scale. These guitars have a very unique sound, the lucite body provides an extremely focused tone without a lot of the overtones associated with traditional wood instruments....I've found it to be particularly useful in the studio for providing clear, punchy fat sounding distorted ryhthm tracks that double well....overall this guitar is not for the true vintage collector but it makes a FANTASTIC addition to the arsenal of a real player. Comes in a nice clean newer Ampeg hardshell case with purple interior lining. I guarantee you will love this one! Thanks for looking. if you want to see the pics better just e-mail me and I'll send them directly to you. Domestic US shipping only, buyer pays $40.00 shipping and insurance."
